If you spend some time browsing N810 websites and fora, you'll see mention of some hacks that, while they can be useful in certain situations, often just lead to a mess.

One of these is "R&D mode" (also referred to as "RD mode"), enabled using a special command-line option for the Linux OS flasher tool. While this provides a way to become root, it also has side effects you don't want (including allegedly disabling battery thermal checking!). Just install rootsh instead.

The Application manager has a hidden Red Pill Mode which enables some alternate behavior. If you absolutely need to use this (and it's quite rare that you do), turn it off afterward or risk a corrupted package database.

Be careful about adding every random repository under the sun. Developers should be using the Maemo garage; check there first and be wary of things available only elsewhere. Don't add repositories for older OS releases (Chinook, Bora) without a good reason.
