If you have a solid 'net connection, you can place and receive telephone calls using the N810, and better yet do so for free, and without giving out any personal information beyond an email address. There seem to be a number of options for providers; I'll outline what worked for me, but look around on your own.

[WARNING]I'm not sure what happens if you dial 911 with this setup. Probably, nothing good. Don't count on this as a way to summon emergency help.

To begin, you'll need a SIP provider for outbound calls. I chose VoipBuster. Note that you do note have to run their Win32 client to register; you can do so via a web signup page. Once you have an account, see the directions for using your own SIP device.

In the Internet Call application menu, go to Tools->Accounts... and create a new SIP account. The user information is your username @ sip.voipbuster.com. Leave Use for PSTN calls checked and leave the advanced settings alone unless you know you need to change them.

Try placing an outbound call. If you get an "Unable to establish connection" popup, ensure you dialed the full number starting with a 1. Example: 17135551212 not 7135551212 or 5551212. If you have the number right, check the account settings. If you think everything is right, keep trying... sometimes it takes a few attempts. People on other SIP phones should be able to call you now, too.

Once outbound calling is working, you can add DID for inbound calls from regular (PSTN) phones. I used IPKall. They will need the SIP information you use for outbound, and will send you a PSTN number (in Washington State) by email. There is nothing to set up on the N810 for this part. Try calling from another PSTN phone once you get your number.
